About the event
Spring-Themed Clay Ceramics for teens (Ages 11-16yrs)
Dive into the magical world of clay in this enchanting 6-week course designed exclusively for young artists aged 11-16th yrs. This drop-off class is the perfect spring adventure, allowing teens to explore their creativity, learn valuable skills, and bring their imaginations to life through the tactile joy of clay. Each week, participants will embark on a new project, culminating in a collection of handcrafted treasures they will cherish.
Course Outline:
- Week 1: Exploring the World of Clay - Spring Flowers Kick off the course with an introduction to clay, learning about its properties, how to handle it, and basic sculpting techniques. Our first project celebrates the renewal of spring, as each child creates their very own clay spring flowers, setting the tone for a season of growth and creativity.
- Week 2: Musical Creations - Design Your Own Wind Chime This week, we'll delve into the delightful world of sound by designing and creating personalised wind chimes. Children will learn how to roll, cut, and shape clay into beautiful pieces that will dance in the wind, producing gentle melodies for their gardens or patios.
- Week 3: The Art of Glazing - Masterpiece Preparation After their creations have had time to dry, students will be introduced to the world of colour and finish through glazing. They'll choose their colours and learn glazing techniques to prepare their spring flowers and wind chimes for the kiln, transforming their work from raw clay into glossy, finished art.
- Week 4:Spring Garden Lanterns: students learn how to hand-build ceramic lanterns shaped like garden lanterns, birdhouses, or whimsical fairy dwellings. They can add cut-out designs, textured surfaces, and translucent glazes to create charming lanterns for illuminating outdoor spaces during spring evenings.
- Week 5: Functional Art - Vase Making Building on the skills developed in previous weeks, children will tackle a more complex project: creating a vase. This lesson focuses on coiling or slab techniques to form functional art pieces that can hold the spring flowers they made in week one, bridging their journey in clay from start to finish.
- Week 6: Final Touches - Glazing Masterpieces In our final week, students will return to the glazing station to add colour and shine to their fairy houses and vases. This last session is a celebration of their hard work, creativity, and the skills they've honed over the course. We'll discuss how the kiln works and what to expect from the final firing process.
